Each dua below is a Quranic or Prophetic supplication with its reference. General permissible supplications are never presented as hadith.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief.
Part of a longer supplication the Prophet ﷺ taught for moments of worry, placing one's burden with Allah.
When: Any time worry or grief presses on the heart.
حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil
Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.
A declaration of reliance on Allah when facing threat or overwhelming circumstances.
When: When afraid, pressured or facing an outcome outside your control.
رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.
The Quranic supplication for parents, taught immediately after the command to honour them.
When: Daily, and especially when parents are unwell or have passed away.
أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ
As'alullaha al-'Azim, Rabba al-'Arshi al-'Azim, an yashfiyak
I ask Allah, the Mighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to cure you.
Recited seven times for the sick, as transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ.
When: When visiting or praying for someone who is ill.
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ
Allahumma anta Rabbi, la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduk
O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant.
The opening of the supplication the Prophet ﷺ called the finest way of seeking forgiveness.
When: Morning and evening, and whenever seeking repentance.
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
Rabbi zidni 'ilma
My Lord, increase me in knowledge.
A Quranic supplication for beneficial knowledge and understanding.
When: Before studying, sitting an exam or seeking understanding.
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ
Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin
Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have done it ourselves.
The supplication of travel, recited on mounting a vehicle.
When: On setting out on a journey.
رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ
Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yun
Our Lord, grant us comfort in our spouses and offspring.
The Quranic supplication for a household of tranquillity and righteousness.
When: When getting married, or praying for one's family.
اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ
Allahumma ikfini bi halalika 'an haramik
O Allah, suffice me with what is lawful from You, away from what is unlawful.
Part of a supplication the Prophet ﷺ taught a man burdened by debt.
When: When under financial pressure or seeking lawful provision.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ
Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi 'ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratik
O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge and Your ability by Your power.
The opening of the Istikhara supplication, prayed after two units of voluntary prayer.
When: When weighing an important, permissible decision.
